The Longevity Pantry: Wholefoods & Plant Medicine For Radiant Ageing
Longevity is one of the defining wellness pursuits of our time. Often framed through the lens of optimisation, supplementation and the promise of extending life itself, it can become a near-endless search – exhausting and demanding, rather than liberating and expanding.
The more meaningful question, and one we ask ourselves often at Orchard St., is not how to live longer, but how to live a full and purpose-driven life – one defined by energy, cognition, mobility and a sense of inherent connection.
If we’re thinking of longevity as an everyday action and meditation, we needn't search far for its foundations. They're waiting in the kitchen pantry.
The Longevity Pantry
Built through consistency rather than perfection, the longevity pantry places everyday nourishment at the centre of radiant ageing – making the pantry not simply a place of storage, but a practical foundation for long-term vitality.
The following collection of nutrient-dense wholefoods, herbs and plant medicines has been chosen to support the body, and our beautiful, messy, whole experience of life on earth.
Turmeric: Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, is among the most extensively studied plant compounds in ageing research, with more than 12,000 peer-reviewed papers examining its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. A 2024 systematic review of clinical trials found curcumin supplementation showed measurable benefits for cognitive function, neurodegeneration and muscle health in older adults, largely through its ability to interrupt the chronic, low-grade inflammation researchers call ‘inflammaging.’ We can't go past Rough Rice's Fire Tiger Seasoning, a fermented turmeric spice mix that packs a real punch.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Olive oil is a longevity food in its most elemental form. Rich in monounsaturated fats and protective polyphenols, it sits at the heart of the Mediterranean diet – one of the world's most enduring models for cardiovascular health. Drizzle it generously over greens, grains and vegetables, and let it carry flavour as readily as it carries benefit. Golden Groves and Yiayia & Friends are O. St. pantry essentials.
Reishi: Long revered in traditional Chinese medicine, reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has more recently drawn scientific interest for its effects on immunosenescence, the natural decline in immune function that comes with age. A clinical study of women aged 60–80 found that eight weeks of reishi supplementation was associated with favourable changes in T-lymphocyte gene expression, lending scientific weight to the mushroom's traditional reputation as an ally for ageing immunity. Enjoy reishi as a warming addition to broths and lattes, or taken in traditional honey pearl form from our friends at Ode Health.
Green Tea: The catechins in green tea, including EGCG, have been studied for their antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits, while L-theanine lends a steadier quality to its natural caffeine lift. Perhaps equally valuable is the ritual itself: leaves steeped, pace softened, attention returned to the present.
Gynostemma: Also known as jiaogulan, gynostemma is a climbing herb traditionally brewed as tea across parts of East and Southeast Asia. Its characteristic compounds, gypenosides, have drawn research interest for their relationship with cellular energy regulation and metabolic health. Enjoy as a gently bitter, cleansing adaptogenic tea.
Berries & Pomegranate: Polyphenols, the pigmented compounds found in berries, pomegranate, olives and tea, are among the most consistently studied nutrients in gut-microbiome-and-ageing research. A randomised crossover trial known as the MaPLE study found that eight weeks on a polyphenol-rich diet was associated with reduced markers of intestinal permeability and inflammation in adults over 60, alongside beneficial shifts in gut bacteria. We reach for Mt. Wilder Berries' organic wild blueberry and wild cranberry juice, purely sourced wild berries bursting with antioxidant potential.
Prebiotic Fibre: A resilient gut microbiome is now understood to be one of the clearest through-lines to healthy ageing, influencing everything from inflammation to nutrient absorption and mood. Research on fibre- and polyphenol-rich dietary patterns shows that even modest dietary changes can meaningfully shift microbial diversity. Think chicory root, oats, leeks and slightly green bananas, alongside The Beauty Chef's Body Collagen.
Ashwagandha: A cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha has drawn growing research interest for its role in regulating cortisol, the stress hormone whose chronic elevation is closely tied to accelerated cellular ageing. Supporting the body's stress response is, increasingly, understood as inseparable from supporting longevity itself. Take consistently in powder or tincture form – we love Enki's spagyric decoction.
Fermented Foods: It goes without saying that fermented foods bring a whole ecosystem of benefit: probiotics, prebiotic fibre and the polyphenols so often found alongside them. No pantry (or fridge) is complete without kimchi, sauerkraut or miso, each delivering live cultures that support microbial diversity – increasingly recognised as one of the clearest markers of a well-supported gut.
Nothing soothes the nervous system like a well-stocked pantry. Explore our collection of Longevity Pantry Essentials.
