Activist Mānuka

Our story

Aotearoa, New Zealand

ACTIVIST was born from two childhoods spent in Aotearoa New Zealand, and a shared belief that the land gives us everything we need. Founded by wife and husband team, Gabrielle Mirkin and Luke Harwood, the brand grew out of lives shaped by nature: Gabrielle’s return to natural healing and whole foods after working as an Art Director in fast-paced New York City; and Luke’s love of surfing and native coastal land, which helped him understand the important role bees play as environmental indicators. Together, they built ACTIVIST around a single conviction: that mānuka honey, in its highest and purest form, is one of the most extraordinary offerings of the natural world.

Bee health as a measure of everything. ACTIVIST’s hives are kept in remote, pristine regions of New Zealand, deliberately removed from areas with GMO-use and urban toxins. Hive numbers are intentionally kept low, giving bees more space to flourish and pollinate freely.

A harvest that gives back. Mānuka is a wild, self-seeding tree that naturally rejuvenates soil, purifies waterways and prevents erosion. The leaves used to distil ACTIVIST's mānuka oil are returned to the ground after harvest, forming a mulch that retains moisture, supports new growth and feeds the insects that enrich the soil beneath.

1% for the Planet. ACTIVIST is a proud member of 1% for the Planet, committing one per cent of annual revenue to approved environmental and conservation partners.
