Among Equals

Sydney, Australia and Goroka, Papua New Guinea

Caroline Sherman is a Sydney-based textile designer and philanthropist whose connection to Papua New Guinea began in 2015, when she travelled to Goroka to meet local communities of women weavers.

Moved by the intricate patterns, striking palettes and cultural depth of Bilum-making, Sherman partnered with community elders to build a social enterprise grounded in independence, creativity and meaningful change. Among them was Florence Jaukae, who has worked with Among Equals since its beginning as a cultural advisor and vital connector to women living in Goroka and more remote regions.

Today, the not-for-profit brand works with more than 3,500 women across eight provinces in Papua New Guinea, generating life-changing revenue for weavers, families and their communities. In 2017, Sherman funded and built the Among Equals Blue Haus: a safe space where the Goroka women can gather, receive care and take part in training. A second space is now in planning, supporting the next chapter of independence for the women and families at the heart of Among Equals.
