A striking backbone pattern is hand-rolled from either upcycled yarn or fibres sourced from surrounding vegetation, coloured with natural dyes made from plants and ochres. Handcrafted over several weeks by a female artisan in Papua New Guinea, this bilum tote carries a story of strength and heritage in every weave.
Source & integrity
Among Equals has created a livelihood intervention for the women weavers of Papua New Guinea, one that enables them to break cycles of gendered violence, to support their children’s education, to afford food and healthcare, and to build better lives for themselves and their families. Through their partnership, the tradition of Bilum-weaving and storytelling is honoured and continues to cross generations from mother to daughter.
