Natural Mineral Sunscreens vs Synthetic Chemical Sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens use physical blockers such as non-nano Zinc Oxide, which act as a shield against the sun’s harmful rays. They sit on the skin’s surface to form a physical barrier that reflects UVA and UVB rays. They’re effective as soon as applied and as they don’t contain chemicals, are gentle on sensitive or acne-prone skin and reassuringly safe for children, babies, during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

In contrast, chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin and provide protection by absorbing the sun’s rays and converting them into heat, which is released from the skin. They contain chemical compounds such as Avobenzone, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, which are potentially less stable, can cause irritation and rashes, may degrade in sunlight and are potentially harmful to the environment.

The difference between Broad Spectrum and SPF

Broad Spectrum means that a product protects from the UVA and UVB rays which can lead to sun damage and cancer, while SPF refers to the amount of UVB rays it blocks. Because they physically block the sun, mineral sunscreens have been shown to have the broadest range of UVA and UVB protection.

A rating of SPF 30 blocks approximately 97 percent of harmful UVB rays while SPF50 increases that by about 1 percent. So while SPF50 is often recommended, SPF 30 is still considered high protection.
